Deep within the lava tube caves of Mount Suswa, one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles unfolds every dawn and dusk. Hundreds of olive baboons — an entire troop, spanning multiple generations — retreat into the caves to sleep, emerging each morning in a coordinated stream of noise and movement that has become known as the Baboon Parliament.

This is one of the only known populations of baboons that sleeps underground, and Suswa is the best place in Africa to witness it. Watching the parliament assemble or disperse, with mothers carrying infants, juveniles tumbling over each other, and dominant males surveying from the rocks, is a wildlife encounter unlike any other.
